PSE posts biggest loss since 2004
By ČTK / Published 9 October 2008

Prague, Oct 8 (CTK) - The Prague Stock Exchange (BCPP) recorded the biggest loss since end-2004 Wednesday, the headline PX index dropping 3.87% to 1,042.6 points, the bourse said.

The last time the index closed lower was Dec 30, 2004. According to dealers, the market followed sell-offs on advanced stock exchanges abroad that continued to be influenced by the global financial crisis.

On Wednesday morning, the PX index even sank below the 1,000-point level for a while and the bourse had to stop trading in the shares of second-hand cars dealer AAA Auto and developer Orco as they had lost more than 20 percent.

While AAA Auto experienced this for the first time, trading in Orco shares has already been suspended several times recently.

Share markets were nevertheless revived by an unexpected and unprecented step by the central banks of the USA, the eurozone, Britain and other countries, including China, which have jointly lowered benchmark interest rates. In most of these countries, the rates have been cut by half a percentage point.

After the rates' cut announcement, the BCPP's loss improved from about 5 percent to less than 2 percent in a short time.
