Zeman to receive ČSSD representatives on Wednesday

Czech President Milos Zeman will receive Social Democrat (CSSD) chairman Jan Hamacek and deputy chairman Jiri Zimola at Prague Castle on Wednesday, probably to discuss the course of the government-forming talks between the CSSD and the ANO movement, Zeman's spokesman Jiri Ovcacek has tweeted.

Czechs' trust in president, gov't, lower house falls in March

Czechs' confidence in President Miloš Zeman declined by 6 percentage points to 50 percent in March as against February, and their trust in the government, deputies and regional governors fell as well, according to a CVVM poll released on Wednesday.

ČSSD had almost 40-million-crown loss in 2017

The Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) had a loss of 39.8 million crowns last year mainly due to its poor results in the autumn general election, its financial director Martin Starec told reporters on Wednesday.

Hamáček: Social Democrats could join coalition with PM Babiš

The Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) could join a coalition led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, ČSSD chairman Jan Hamáček said on Tuesday, an option his party had previously rejected. Hamáček said the ČSSD would demand either the Interior or Finance Ministry in the new government in order to have control over areas where Babiš faces a conflict of interest due to his business activities or an ongoing case of an alleged fraud.

Cabinet backs referendum bill safeguarding against Czexit

Czech PM Andrej Babiš's minority government approved a proposed bill on national referendums on Tuesday, setting a high ceiling on holding votes and excluding international agreements to safeguard against potential Czexit calls. The conditions in the government-backed proposal are tougher than other ideas floated - especially those of the anti-EU, far-right SPD party - as Babiš's ANO party has sought to prevent any EU referendum in the largely euroskeptic nation.
