ANO approves lists of candidates for Senate, local elections

The national executive committee of ANO, the Czech senior government party, has approved its lists of candidates for the October Senate and local elections in all wards except for Prague where Patrik Nacher may be replaced as the proposed election leader, Jaroslav Faltynek said on Friday.

Deals signed ahead of confidence vote in new government

Representatives of ANO and the Social Democrats have signed a coalition deal between the two parties, a day before their joint minority government undergoes the necessary vote of confidence in the lower house. Also on Tuesday ANO and the Communist Party put their signatures to a deal under which the latter have agreed to tolerate the new government.

The right-wing opposition criticises the Czech government of Andrej Babis (ANO) for bringing the Communists to power for the first time since the 1989 fall of the communist regime and will not vote confidence in it in the Chamber of Deputies, the opposition leaders said on Tuesday.

New justice minister does not mind prosecuted PM Babiš

New Justice Minister Jan Knezinek, who replaced Tatana Mala (ANO) on Tuesday, has nothing against being in the government with a criminally prosecuted prime minister, he told journalists on Tuesday after President Milos Zeman appointed him to the post.

PM Babiš nominates constitutional law professor to replace suspected plagiarist as justice minister

In the wake of justice minister Taťána Malá's sudden resignation over allegations of plagiarism PM Andrej Babiš has nominated constitutional law professor Jan Kněžínek to fill her shoes, following an outcry after he first suggested he would take over the post himself.

KSČM to support gov't, not to provoke no confidence vote

The Czech Communists (KSCM) will back the new minority cabinet of ANO and the Social Democrats (CSSD) in the lower house's vote of confidence and will not provoke a vote of no confidence in the cabinet afterwards, based on the draft toleration pact between ANO and the KSCM, which CTK gained on Monday.

Social Democrats insist on Poche as foreign minister

The Czech Social Democrat (CSSD) board agreed on Monday that its resolution saying that MEP Miroslav Poche is the party's only candidate for the post of foreign minister is still valid, party head Jan Hamacek has told journalists.

Justice minister Malá resigns over plagiarism allegations

Czech Justice Minister Taťána Malá has resigned on her post after 13 days in office. In her announcement on Monday she said that the accusations of plagiarism in her theses, levelled against her, were just a campaign. Malá said she insisted on her position that she had not made any major mistake. PM Andrej Babiš said he presumed he would ask President Miloš Zeman to entrust him with temporarily heading the office instead of Malá.

Opposition rejects Babiš as head of Justice Ministry

The centre-right opposition welcomed the resignation of Czech Justice Minister Taťána Malá over a plagiarism scandal on Monday, but it considers bizarre and alarming that the post is to be temporarily held by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who is prosecuted over an EU subsidy fraud.

ČSSD leader: ANO to bear risks with justice minister
