Thursday is the 50th anniversary of perhaps the most famous protest in the history of Czech sport, when gymnast Věra Čáslavská looked away while the Soviet anthem was played at the 1968 Olympics.

President Miloš Zeman will present Czech tennis legend Radek Štěpánek with state honours on the 28th of October. Štěpánek won the Davis Cup twice for the Czech Republic in 2012 and 2013, and won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympic Games.

The Czech Republic has a long tradition of horse racing and the most celebrated race of all is the Great Pardubice, or Velká pardubická. The only woman to ever win the race is Lata Brandisová, and she won way back in 1937. Her remarkable story is the subject of a book, currently being written by the British journalist, Richard Askwith.
